Valuation Services

Whether handling a full house contents or a single item, David takes particular care to discuss and ascertain each client’s unique requirements and to tailor the style of the valuation accordingly. Illustrations of items valued and/or room and interior shots are offered in personalised CD form as an optional part of the valuation package. Fees are based on time taken, not as a percentage of sums valued; typically this can range from a minimum of £150 up to £500 for a full day. There is no additional charge for research or travel, except in exceptional circumstances; nor is VAT chargeable.

Home Contents Valuation

A comprehensive inventory of your house contents will give you the confidence of having an accurate record of your belongings and confirmation that your level of insurance cover is appropriate. There have been considerable fluctuations in the market value of antiques and works of art over the past twenty years and it may be that you are paying significantly too much by way of premium. In addition to the valuation of your principal items David can, if required, make provision for residual contents : many valuers do not offer this option. Illustrations can be incorporated into your valuation at no extra cost. Many insurance companies now offer discounts on premiums to clients who have commissioned formal valuations.

Insurance Health Check

This is an informal style of valuation which takes a maximum of two hours, designed to assess that your insurance cover is appropriate and balanced. Initially David will discuss your insurance requirements with you before surveying your house contents. On conclusion of the survey he will discuss his findings and recommendations with you. This will be followed up with a letter confirming his verbal report. The fixed fee for this service including local travelling expenses is £150.

Probate (Inheritance Tax) Valuation

Although not a legal requirement, a valuation for Inheritance Tax purposes may result in a significant cost saving to clients following the death of a relative or dependant see FAQs. Such a valuation can also be of immense comfort and assistance to families involved in the dispersal of a house contents, a difficult exercise at the best of times. David is familiar with the specific requirements of the Capital Taxes Office but can alter the format of the valuation to accommodate the particular wishes of his clients. In his role as an independent valuer David will also be pleased to offer clients impartial advice on the best means of disposal of unwanted items.

Advice on Buying and Selling

Clients with an interest in buying or selling antiques often require guidance on proposed purchases or on the best means of sale. David, with his independent status, can offer impartial advice in this respect : whether sourcing items for clients, offering a vetting service on prospective purchases or recommending the best means of disposal of possessions, David will be pleased to discuss your specific requirements with you.
